Lore & Background

Lambert was a French soldier stationed in an underground bunker during World War I. He and his friend Henri Clément would gamble with dice to determine who would go out on patrol. One evening, Henri—smarting from a series of pranks played by Lambert—cheated with a sleight-of-hand trick, causing Lambert to lose the dice game and be sent on patrol. When Lambert failed to return, Henri left the bunker to search for him. Henri found Lambert trapped in a large crater in No Man's Land and gave him water from the crater to revive him. That water had originated from an ancient Roman tunnel discovered beneath the bunker, which the garrison had been excavating. The water was part of ancient rituals and began to slowly mutate Lambert and drive him insane. Lambert later brought a wounded and comatose Henri back to the bunker, but Lambert himself was completely unscathed. Over time, Lambert completely transformed into the Beast, stalking the bunker and killing his former comrades.

In Their Own Story

In 1916, during World War I, French soldier Henri Clément heads out into No Man's Land in search of his friend Augustin Lambert, who has gone missing during a patrol. Henri finds Lambert trapped in a large crater. He has Lambert drink from the water he finds inside the crater to revive him, and attempts to carry Lambert to safety. However, they are spotted by the Germans and Henri is knocked unconscious by an artillery shell blast. Henri wakes up some time later inside a seemingly abandoned bunker. Exploring the bunker, Henri learns that some unknown Beast had appeared out of nowhere and has been terrorizing the bunker, slaughtering the French garrison one by one. Through clues left behind by soldiers, Henri pieces together that the water Lambert drank originated from an ancient Roman tunnel and was part of ancient rituals; it began to slowly mutate him and drive him insane until he completely transformed into the Beast. Henri eventually recovers dynamite and a detonator and blasts open the exit, falling into the Roman ruins where he has a final confrontation with the Beast. If Henri fails to kill the Beast, it escapes along with him into No Man's Land.

Reader's Guide

Augustin Lambert is not a playable character but is central to the plot of *Amnesia: The Bunker*. He is the catalyst for the game's events: his disappearance prompts Henri to leave the bunker, and his transformation into the Beast creates the primary threat. The game reveals Lambert's fate through journal entries and environmental storytelling. Players learn that Lambert and Henri gambled with dice to determine patrol duty, and Henri cheated, causing Lambert to lose. The water from the Roman tunnel that revived Lambert was part of ancient rituals and caused his mutation. Lambert later returned Henri to the bunker, unscathed, before fully transforming. The Beast that hunts the player throughout the game is Lambert in his mutated form. The game's endings depend on whether Henri kills the Beast (sending it into an underground abyss) or flees, allowing the Beast to escape into No Man's Land.
